6 Fire Safety Tips for Your School-aged Kids

Parents cannot protect their children at all times, which is why it is important that children should be taught some fire safety tips and drills to help them deal with a situation even in the face of danger. This knowledge is also important to prevent house fires from happening. So, what does your child need to know about fire safety?

1. Learn how to use the fire extinguisher. This is only applicable for older kids. As for younger ones, learn about extinguishers and their use. This introduces children to fire safety devices, which, they too will learn to use, when they get older.

2. Courage is important. A great way to learn about courage is by watching a video or film about firefighters and rescues. Observe how firefighters rescue people with presence of mind, focus, valor, and their commitment to save lives, fro the moment they quickly unload their fire fighting equipment from the fire truck. Courage comes from their knowledge and training. You can also be as courageous as the firefighters.

3. When your clothes catch fire, stop, drop, and roll like a rolling pin. This will eradicate the fire on your clothes. You can also get a blanket and wrap it around you before rolling on the floor.

4. CO2 fire extinguisher is used for class B fires; fires that comprise electrical hazards and flammable liquids. If you see that a computer is on fire, or even a television, you can use this type of fire extinguisher. Or, you may also throw a thick blanket or a fire blanket over it.

5. In the presence of smoke, stay low and quickly make your way out of the house. Smoke suffocates, so it is important not to inhale it. But since you cannot hold your breath for a long time, be as low as the floor, ideally 1 inch from the floor, and quickly crawl out.

6. Be familiar with the city’s fire regulations, because it enables you to observe proper fire safety measures. For younger children, it is already the parents’ responsibility to teach and inform their child about basic fire safety measures included in the city’s regulation.
