5 Ways to Protect Your Kids from Fire even without your presence

Kids are vulnerable to danger. Most of the time, they are in need of adults to protect them and keep them safe. However, adults have a lot of things to take care of; thus, they have no recourse but to leave the kids to fend for themselves either in school or at home. School-aged kids already have the capability to understand and remember concepts and instructions. Here are 5 fire protection tips for your school-aged kids.

1. Teach them about the use and importance of fire blankets. Tell your children that fire blankets are special clothes that are wrapped around a person to protect the person from heat and from catching fire. You can even demonstrate by showing them where the blankets are kept and how they are going to wrap it around themselves.

2. Store flammable items properly and keep them out of children’s reach.

3. Teach kids about the use and importance of fire extinguishers. Familiarize the children of its location, or locations if your have more than 1. For older kids, it would be best to teach them how to use it

4. Program emergency numbers for speed dial. Then, inform kids about the numbers as well as its corresponding agency, like the fire department or police; also, show the kids how to dial the emergency numbers.

5. Familiarizing kids with the fire fighting equipment in the house, like an escape ladder, helps them maintain focus in the midst of an emergency situation.

The more you educate your kids, the more they are able to protect themselves. Letting your kids know the importance of fire safety measures and fire safety equipment, such as the CO2 fire extinguisher, they become more confident in handling the situation, as they will not be left clueless. By teaching them and giving them directions, you have taught your kids how to move and what to do, increasing their chances of survival even when you are not around.

One classic example is the school. Usually, you are not around in school and there is only 1 teacher in a class of 30; how then would a teacher manage to save all these kids during a fire? It is for this reason that schools adhere to fire regulations, one of which is fire safety drill. Fire drills educate students on how to move, where to go, and how to behave when there is a fire. Kids are also even taught how to use the fire extinguisher. In this manner, the teacher would be able to effectively manage the class and guide the kids to safety.

Children, even at 7 years old, are already able to remember concepts and follow instructions. It is for this reason that adults should not equate their young age with incapability; rather, children should be educate especially when it comes to safety. The best protection that you can give your child is the knowledge; and your peace of mind only comes from knowing that you have taught your child, in the best possible way you can, about fire safety.
